The flexor digitorum profundus is a muscle in the forearm of humans that flexes the fingers ( besides known as digits ). It is considered an extrinsic bridge player muscleman because it acts on the hand while its brawn belly is located in the forearm. together the flexor muscle pollicis longus, pronator quadratus, and flexor muscle digitorum profundus form the deep layer of adaxial forearm muscles. [ 1 ] The brawn is named from Latin ‘deep curve of the fingers ‘ .

Flexor digitorum profundus originates in the upper 3/4 of the anterior and median surfaces of the ulna, interosseous membrane and deep dashboard of the forearm. The muscle fans out into four tendons ( one to each of the second to fifth fingers ) to the palmar infrastructure of the distal phalanx. Along with the flexor muscle digitorum superficialis, it has long tendons that run down the arm and through the carpal tunnel and impound to the palmar side of the phalanges of the fingers.

Flexor digitorum profundus lies abstruse to the superficialis, but it attaches more distally. consequently, profundus ‘s tendons go through the tendons of superficialis, and end up attaching to the distal phalanx. For this reason profundus is besides called the perforating muscle. [ 1 ] The lumbricals of the bridge player rebel from the radial slope of its tendons. [ 1 ]

Flexor digitorum profundus is a flexor muscle of the wrist ( midcarpal ), metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints. [ 1 ] The lumbricals, intrinsic muscles of the hand, bind to the tendon of flexor muscle digitorum profundus. thus, the flexor muscle brawn is used to aid the lumbrical muscles in their function as extensors of the interphalangeal joints. As the lumbrical muscles originate on the palmar slope of the hired hand and attach on the abaxial aponeurosis, power is transferred from the flexor muscle digitorum profundus muscle to fully extend the fingers a well as flex the metacarpophalangeal joints. The tension generated by flexor muscle digitorum profundus at the more distal joints is determined by wrist place. flexure of the wrist causes muscle shortening at that point, reducing latent hostility that can be generated more distally. Fingers can not be fully flexed if the wrist is amply flexed. [ 8 ]

In many primates, the FDP is fused with the flexor muscle pollicis longus ( FPL ). In great apes the abdomen of the FDP has a separate tendon for the FDP. In lesser apes, both muscles have classify bellies in the forearm, but in Old World monkeys they separate in the carpal tunnel. The lack of specialization in the FDP muscular structure in baboons makes it improbable that this imp can control individual fingers independently. [ 9 ]
